Calvin Harris- How deep is your love

This video is a house song featuring a pop artist who sings making it house/pop. Calvin Harris often has women in his videos because it attracts the male gaze and because he usually does house music he never sings so the video is not about him as much and rather it is conceptual or narrative around some other people. In this video we follow a female actress who is going through places such as clubs looking at guys and the aim was to make her look sexy to appeal to the audience watching which as a primary audience would probably be male teens or 20 year olds.

Women are defiently objectified in this video because we follow a actress who wears swimsuits and dance around provocotivly. The video starts with a close up panning up and down the females body showing her body off in a sexual way allowing the audience the view everything. We then see a long shot of the actress walking over and we view it from behind which again is allowing the audience to view the female especially for the male gaze. As the video goes on we see the female brushing up against people through close ups of her hand going uop and down a mans arm and chest which signifies she is teasing the man and showing herself as sexy as she attracts the man. trippers are seen in a wide shot followed by a close up of the strippers on tnhe pole which is a large objectification as it is showing women in very little clothing dancing for money. This makes them seem a lot like a object as we see loads of men stood around looking at her dance. The part that stands out the most as objectification has to be the wet shower scene where we see the females rubbing herself in a very sexual way that makes them just look un-human and just as if they are there for the male gaze.

There are parts where she is signified as powerful for example The bike scene at the end where she is being circled by a load of men on bikes and this shows her as the powerful one as she is in the center. She is also very well lit showing her importance as she stands out with the glowing light used. Another scene is the tattoo parlor with all the men in as she goes past and this is showing her as the powerful one because we see the men as a canvas just for art to try and impress this lady. This scene is shown by a lot of panning mid shots show you can see the areas of importance which are her walking past not getting tattoos and then the men looking at her whilst they get tattoos. Overall this video has a lot of camera time for the female which could be for the male gaze however it also shows her as powerful because of the amount of time she gets which is more than any other person in the video making her a protagonist. We see her in a number of shots mainly in close ups to see her face and body however a range of long shots are used as well as she does the effects to show her as the center of attention.
